YDA CHATS Episode 2: Paul Nevison

This week on YDA CHATS: YDA Jury President for 2020 Karim Bartoletti chats to…

PAUL NEVISON, Gold Screen winner for Changing the World Frame by Frame, YDA 2019

Growing up as an early 80s kid in small town New Zealand, Paul’s early memories are full of All Black Rugby, Star Wars and stealing his dad’s home-brew and getting away with it. Filmmaking has taken Paul to over 40 countries where he has developed a film style that gets him up close to his subjects utilizing intimate portraits to uncover truths both personal and universal. Stories that champion the underdog, the unlikely and the overlooked are what get him out of bed in the morning.

“I’m passionate about finding truth however uncomfortable and it’s the genius of art that when the front door of the intellect is closed the backdoor of the imagination is open….this is the subversive nature of storytelling that has a way of reaching into the soul without asking permission.” Paul’s work has received international attention with recent projects picking up directors awards at Ciclope and a Gold Screen award at the 2019 Young Director Award at Cannes. Paul is currently in post-production on his first feature documentary “The Evil Good” slated for release in 2020, which details the story of a Phoenix cop battling his own family in the Mexican drug cartels. Paul lives in Australia with his young family.
