YDA 2026 Turns Its Focus to Africa

Africa is the birthplace of storytelling.
As the art form has evolved from cave paintings to literature and music, the continent’s voice remains compelling and provocative.

There is a new generation of African storytellers who continue to break barriers, doing so on a different kind of canvas – the screen. Blending documentary, fiction, and performance, they are reclaiming narrative ownership and reflecting a creative force that is both urgent and expanding.

With this in mind, the Young Director Award introduces Focus – a new initiative spotlighting regions where exceptional talent remains underrepresented globally. There is no better place to begin than Africa.

This edition is supported by Blackboard Community, a non-profit platform dedicated to democratising creativity and filmmaking as a career for marginalised youth. Founded by Nkanyezi Masango, Chief Creative Officer of Ogilvy Cape Town, Blackboard ensures that the Focus on Africa initiative is meaningful for local talent. Masango will play an advisory role in curating the jury, marketing, and implementing conditions that make participation from Africa more accessible.

The initiative is further strengthened by YDA’s ambassador in South Africa, Janette De Villiers, who is working closely with Masango and the YDA team to build awareness locally and encourage emerging directors to submit their work.

More than a spotlight, the Focus on Africa is a celebration of African cinema, the producers behind the work and the future of storytelling.

As part of Focus on Africa YDA introduces significantly reduced entry fees for filmmakers from the region. Directors interested in learning more about submitting their work are invited to get in touch.
