Sign me up: KRONCK (aka Jessi Benzing & Maximilian Gerlach)

After Max thought of Jessi as a whacky troublemaker in his hangoverish Sunday and Jessi thought of Max as a childish egoist with an addiction to weird kind of food, they finally recognized that they had quite the same taste in humor, movies and fantastic future visions. So they were destined to pair up as a director duo in 2007. After focusing on writing and directing commercials -‐ 2010 a strange new decade started and a strange new name was needed so from there on they go by the melodic pseudonym of KRONCK!

Tell us the thinking behind Third World Cook.

The Cook is part of “Thank You Third World”, a multimedia-based campaign dealing with our ignorant way of consuming products produced under degrading circumstances in the third world. We believe that it can’t be right to donate ten bucks every Christmas and to live irresponsible for the rest of the year. These problems are not solved by just ignoring them. What we need is to be aware of the consequences of our every day behavior and to change it! Therefore there is no relief organization behind our campaign, no chance to salve your rebelling conscience by donating money. At www.thank-you-third-world.com you can post a picture of you and your favorite third world product plus thanksgiving, for those who do without freedom, food and peace to provide us with products: A lot of provocation and a lot of open space for discussions!

The star seems a very natural German tv chef?

Although we shot the commercial in a real German TV cooking studio our cook is not a real cook. He was a well-cast actor named Markus H. Eberhard from Munich, whom we owe a lot, as he didn’t only strike the right note in the humour we wanted to get across but also had to pay for everyone who took him for a real TV cook and insulted him for his seemingly inappropriate behaviour…

How did you get involved in Thank You Third World and what does it means to you both.

There are always some topics that need to be made at a special time. We think Thank You Third World was long overdue after seeing years of starving children on TV screens that could be switched off at the push of a bottom. That is why we created Thank You Third World and it means a lot to us due to all the discussion and feedback it aroused. We wanted the people to hate it, love it, no matter what, but also just to talk and discuss it. And they did!

Planning a busy year for KRONCK?

Yes, filled with new images, striking ideas and basically a lot of great commercials. We’re always looking for new inspiring people to work with and thrilling projects to shoot. So if you are out there: Let’s get it done!

Long-term plans?

We graduated from the University of Television and Film in Munich in December 2009 and we want to earn our living with what we love to do: writing and directing for film, commercials and online campaigns. Apart from that, we are looking for an employer, a rich patron or an obscure organization to finance our own picturesque island.

Shake Your City won an award during the ADC Junior Days 2007 hosted by the Art Directors Club and it won the Salve TV Click Award 2008. The viral was an official work for sony ericsson. It featured a new walkman phone which enabled users to skip a song forward by shaking the phone. It was our debut in directing.
