Series – New Category for 2023

The YDA has created a new category to recognise young directors who are stepping into series.

Directing a series is a landmark achievement and the director’s journey to get here is by no means easy. Through the creation of the brand new series category, the Young Director Award seeks to promote the ingenious talent and resolve of young directors who have chosen to work with this medium.

‘We live in a very exciting time, where directors are finding more opportunities to explore both the words of advertising and the worlds of fiction. In short, a director’s career nowadays does not have to be boxed into one category. For me, the series medium is the natural stepping stone for a director to move away from very short format filmmaking into extended-length fiction direction. Through the brand-new YDA Series Category, we want to help young directors smash the glass ceiling and allow them to follow their wildest dreams.’

YDA President | Francois Chilot

At the YDA, we have established some possible journeys into the series medium and this is reflected in the organisation of the category.

For example, as a young director,

1. You have developed and directed an original series. The show has been commissioned and made available for public viewing.
Eligible for BEST ORIGINAL SERIES

2. You have developed and directed a series pilot episode. The series has not been commissioned.
Eligible for BEST SERIES PILOT

When entering, young directors are asked to enter their film into the appropriate sub-category either BEST ORIGINAL SERIES or BEST SERIES PILOT. When films are put before the jury, a distinction will be made between episodes which are A) under 20 mins  and B) over 20 mins. This ensures that all episodes, regardless of length, will be judged on a purely qualitative basis.
